RFID is an automatic identification method, relying on storing and remotely retrieving data using devices called RFID tags or transponders. An RFID tag is an object that can be applied to or incorporated into
a product, animal, or person for the purpose of identification using
radio waves. Some tags can be read from several meters away and beyond
the line of sight of the reader.
RFID Department of Defense & Wal-Mart Mandates
October 23, 2003 – “The Department of Defense announced today
the establishment of a Radio Frequency Identification Policy (RFID).
RFID technology greatly improves the management of inventory by
providing hands-off processing. The equipment quickly accounts for and
identifies massive inventories, enhancing the processing of material
transactions to allow DOD to realign resources and streamline business
processes….The new policy will require suppliers to
put passive RFID tags on the lowest possible piece part/case/pallet
packaging by January 2005. “
Wal-Mart and the United States Department of Defense have published Requirements that their Vendors Place RFID Tags on all shipments to improve Supply Chain Management. The deadlines have been extended
several times because many Vendors Face Significant Difficulties Implementing RFID Systems. Another Wal-Mart division,Sam’s Club,
has also moved in this direction. It sent letters dated Jan. 7, 2008,
to all of its suppliers, stating that by Jan. 31, 2008, every full
shipped to its distribution center in DeSoto, Texas, or directly to one
of its stores served by that DC, must bear an EPC Gen 2 RFID tag.
Suppliers failing to comply will be charged a service fee.

What Is Radio Frequency Identification (RFID)?
A method of identifying unique items using radio waves. Typically, a reader communicates with a microchip embedded in a label which holds digital information.
How Does RFID Work?
Think of RFID as a system of several key components. These components are: a a microchip with an antenna, a label that “carries” the microchip and a reader with an antenna that receives the microchip’s signal. The reader sends out electromagnetic waves. The microchip’s antenna is tuned to receive these waves. The chip then modulates the waves that the antenna sends back to the reader and the reader converts the new waves into digital data.
Why Is RFID In Demand?
RFID can have many benefits, from controlling shrinkage in retail environments to speeding distribution throughout entire supply chains to tracking individual purchases to specific items and so on. The uses are many and varied – based on saving resources or gathering valuable data or both.
